Police Charge 2 Girls in Suspicious Powder Hoax

Two 17-year-old girls were charged by Darien Police with breach of peace, threatening and conspiring to commit both crimes in connection with the Labor Day Weekend hoax involving suspicious white powder and threatening letters.

Two 17-year-old Darien girls turned themselves in to Darien Police Monday after they were told police had obtained a warrant for their arrest in connection with suspicious powder and threatening letters delivered to two Tokeneke homes over Labor Day weekend.

Each girl was charged with two counts of first-degree breach of peace, conspiracy to commit first-degree breach of peace, second-degree threatening and conspiracy to commit second-degree threatening. Each girl is scheduled to appear later this month in state Superior Court in Stamford.

The matter was investigated by the police detective bureau and youth division.

"The names of the two females are being withheld due to their age, both being seventeen at the time of the incident," the department said in a news release emailed at 5:35 p.m. Tuesday.

"Detectives are confident that this was a random act and the powder was identified as not being a health hazard," according to the news release. "The homes that were subject to the incident were not targeted in any way."
