Police are searching for the driver of a Toyota involved in a hit-and-run that sent a 15-year-old male to the hospital with life threatening injuries.

Darien police are searching for the driver of a car involved in a hit-and-run that sent a 15-year-old Darien male to the hospital with life threatening head injuries. The accident took place at about 2:30 p.m. on Hoyt Street near St. John's Cemetery, Saturday afternoon.

"We're hoping that we can get to the end of this case," said Sgt. Jeremiah Marron. "We're not identifying the victim at present."

The vehicle, described as a "newer model," silver or gray Toyota Camry, fled the scene after striking the young man from behind; police say the teen was walking northbound on Hoyt Street toward New Canaan.

"There is no sidewalk," said Sgt. Marron.

Emergency officials arrived to the scene at about 2:30 p.m. Noroton Heights Fire Department assisted, and Darien's EMS Post 53 transported the teenager to Stamford Hospital where he is currently in critical condition, suffering life-threatening head injuries.

According to witnesses, the vehicle "just kept going" after striking the young man, said Sgt. Marron.

"It's pretty cold to not stop if you know you struck someone," said Marron. "It could have happened for any number of reasons. All we have is that someone did not stop."

The victim's mother arrived at the scene and followed her son to hospital, said Sgt. Marron.

A stretch of Hoyt Street was closed to traffic through 6 p.m., as emergency officials cleared the scene and Darien police furthered investigation.

"Right now we ask only that people who actually saw the collision, or who have information about the vehicle in question notify the police," said Sgt. Marron.
