Darien 8th-Most DUIs in CT This Holiday Season

A look at DUI arrests per capita from Dec. 24 to Jan. 1.

Police departments across Connecticut were especially vigilant over the holiday season — a time of year associated with merriment and, sometimes, impaired driving.

Between Dec. 24, 2013 and Jan. 1, 2014, local police departments initiated almost 6,700 traffic stops, responded to over 1,660 motor vehicle accidents and charged 142 drivers with operating under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

“Across Connecticut municipal police and state troopers were hard at work over the Holiday Season to help travelers reach their destinations safely," Connecticut Police Chiefs Association (CPCA) President and Southington Police Chief Jack Daly said. "This is just some of the work they did.”

The slideshow above lists the Top 20 towns with the most DUI arrests by population in that eight-day period.

(Slide figures show percent capita, or the number of arrests/stops/accidents per 100 residents.)

Tragically, local police also reported four deaths due to traffic accidents between Christmas Eve and New Years Day.

“Each year thousands of lives are lost on the nation’s highways,” Daly said. “The goal is encouraging all motorists to be especially diligent in exercising the safest driving practices possible.”
