Wild Bears Get Closer to Darien: One Spotted in New Canaan

New Canaanites are advised: Do not approach the bear and bring the pets inside. Those wild bears just get closer and closer to Darien—any closer and they'll be fishing off of Weed Beach.

[UPDATE] 12:43 p.m. The black bear was last seen meandering into the woods behind New Canaan Country Club.

"We just want to advise residents to keep their dogs inside in that area because a dog will approach a bear, but a dog will not survive a bear attack," said Animal Control Officer Maryann Kleinschmitt.

As the bear has show no signs of aggression, DEEP will not take any action, said Kleinschmitt. The country club was also notified.

"As long is he keeps moving along, everything will be fine. He'll make his way to New York and we'll just leave him alone," said Kleinschmitt.
