A 66-year-old Wilton man died late Wednesday following a single-car accident in Wilton Center, police say.

Raymond Kamaitis, of 39 Boulder Brook Road, was pronounced dead at Norwalk Hospital following the accident near Wilton Library at about 6:20 p.m., according to a press release from Wilton Police Capt. John Lynch.

“The vehicle driven by Mr. Kamaitis was traveling southbound on Old Ridgefield Road when it suddenly crossed into the northbound lane, drove onto the sidewalk and struck a tree on the east shoulder,” Lynch said in the release.

A passenger in the 2012 Nissan Rogue SUV, 55-year-old Leslie Cullen, also of 39 Boulder Brook Road, was in the passenger seat and was admitted to Norwalk Hospital Wednesday night with “significant injuries,” police said.

The area of the accident, 134 Old Ridgefield Road, was closed between Godfrey Place and Wilton Library “for several hours,” Lynch said, while police investigated.

The investigation is ongoing, police said.

Both front airbags deployed in the SUV, police said.

Paramedics from the Wilton Volunteer Ambulance Corps responded, as did the Wilton Fire Department, Lynch said.
