New Canaan Hit with Smash & Grab Case Like Darien's

Windows of three vehicles were smashed and items taken from them at Waveny Park on Saturday--at about the time when the same thing was happening at the Darien YMCA.

Three vehicles parked in a lot at Waveny Park each had a window smashed and items taken on Saturday March 22, according to New Canaan police reports.

The incidents occurred sometime between 2 and 4 p.m., police said. (The same day, at about the same time, Darien police received a report of a similar crime involving five SUVs parked at Darien YMCA.)

All three vehicles had been locked, police were told.

The front passenger window of a 2012 Hundai Tucson was smashed and a purse was taken, along with $100 in cash and credit cards.

The park at that time was well populated, with many people in the surrounding area, police said, but no one noticed. Police in New Canaan and Darien have said that vehicle windows can be broken without making much noise.

There are no security cameras installed at Waveny Park, police said. Cars have been targets of thefts and break-ins at the park quite a few times in the past, according to police.
