The accident forced in the closure of I-95 South at exit 16, leaving East Avenue at a standstill.

NORWALK — Connecticut State Police are investigating a fatal accident on Interstate 95 after a female driver was struck and killed by an oncoming tractor-trailer when her car went out of control.

The accident, reported at 11:43 a.m., forced the shutdown of I-95 southbound at exit 16, pushing all traffic onto East Avenue until the highway was reopened around 3 p.m.

The incident occurred where Route 7 southbound enters I-95 southbound.

Norwalk Deputy Fire Chief Ed Prescott, who visited the scene, said it appeared that after the woman's VW Jetta entered I-95, her car struck another, causing her vehicle to spin out and plow into the center median.

A tractor-trailer then struck her car on the passenger side, Prescott said. Though the truck driver locked up his brakes, Prescott explained that it took about 200 feet for the rig to come to a stop as the Jetta was pushed in front of it.

"[The truck driver] did all he could," he added.

A Norwalk police officer reached the woman's car and broadcast that she was unconscious. A short time later, a fire department officer radioed that the state medical examiner needed to be called in.
