(Mostly) Millionaires Seek Senate

Your daily, local conversation on news and notes from the campaign trail to Congress.

U.S. Senate

If Linda McMahon is elected she will be the richest senator in Washington D.C. with assets between her and her husband as high as $350 million. , with other higher-polling candidates Chris Shays and Susan Bysiewicz also millionaires. The main exception is Chris Murphy, the favorite to win the Democratic nomination. According to the Hartford Courant his assets range between $20,000-$60,000. He also owes money on his student loans and a mortgage.

Jim Himes (D): Himes explained some of the goings-on in the Capitol when he gave his thoughts on the “Domestic Energy and Jobs Act.” Below are his Tweets in chronological order.

The "Domestic Energy and Jobs Act" includes a provision that requires a fee to protest against a drilling rig. #selling1stamendment

Corporations filing protests as persons would not have to pay that fee. Ok, that's not true. But some in this Chamber wish it were.

Buuuut, the House GOP did just defeat an amendment to clarify that such fee could not violate free expression or right of redress. #liberty?

Steve Obsitnik (R): On Facebook, Obsitnik posted an annotated letter from opponent Jim Himes sharply criticizing the incumbent. Obsitnik prefaced the post with this: “In the words of Thomas Halliburton, ‘When a man is wrong wrong and won't admit it, he always gets angry.’”

ELSEWHERE IN CONNECTICUT:

Third District

Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D) continued her campaign to keep the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) by introducing an amendment Thursday to provide the CFTC with an additional $128 million. In prepared remarks before the House of Representatives, DeLauro said:

"The current funding level for the CFTC sets the Commission up for failure. If the current funding level remains as is, Wall Street will be able to continue the risky manipulation of derivatives that brought on the last collapse. Big Oil will continue to enjoy inflated profits every year due to erratic and artificially swollen oil prices."

Wayne Winsley (R): Winsley is using Twitter to solicit campaign donations. In a post on June 21, he writes: “Wayne Winsley 4 Congress. Smaller government, Fiscal responsibility Individual freedoms. http://winsleyforcongress.com/ Donate Now”

Fifth District

According to a story published by CT News Junkie earlier this week, the headline-grabbing FBI probe into Chris Donovan’s campaign “don’t seem to be having much impact” on the Fifth District race. Still, opponents such as Andrew Roraback have used the opportunity to question how the alleged illegal contributions could have happened.
