Public Hearing this Morning on Closure of Norwalk Social Security Office [UPDATE]

The Social Security Administration reportedly plans to close its Norwalk office at 24 Belden Ave. on Jan. 31 as it seeks ways to streamline operations and reduce operational costs.

Update, 4:39 p.m.:

U.S. Rep. Jim Himes (D-4th District) and U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal have announced they will hold a public hearing Thursday about the announced closure of the Social Security Administration office in Norwalk.

The hearing is meant "to provide residents currently served by the Norwalk Social Security office an opportunity to share their concerns regarding the impact of the office’s slated closure," according to a news release Himes' office sent Tuesday afternoon. "Officials from SSA [U.S. Social Security Administration] will also be on hand to answer questions from concerned citizens."

The hearing takes place from 10 to 11 a.m. at the , 11 Allen Rd., Norwalk.

In addition to Himes and Blumenthal, other officials expected to attend the meeting include Elaine C. Werner and Kathy Bass, each on the staff of U.S.  Sen. Joseph Lieberman; Roberto Medina, SSA regional communications director; and Steve Richardson, SSA deputy regional communications director.

According to a report in the CT Post, the SSA plans to close the Norwalk office at 24 Belden Avenue on Jan. 31 as it seeks ways to streamline operations and reduce operational costs. The three lawmakers are reportedly urging the SSA to reverse the decision or at least delay it until those who are affected can express their opinions.

The Norwalk office reportedly serves more than 300 people per week. Another Social Security Administration office near Darien is located in .
