New Way to Pay for Parking at Town Train Stations Considered

As part of an update in the way commuters pay for train station parking, commuters could use their smartphone or tablet (or computer), or go to a pay station.

The Board of Selectmen are considering the use of automatic payment kiosks (or "pay stations") at the Darien and Noroton Heights railroad stations, to replace the current system.

A discussion about the proposed system is on the agenda for Monday night's Board of Selectmen meeting in Town Hall. (The board's regular meeting takes place in Room 206, starting at 7:45 p.m. and is commonly covered by Darien TV79, the town's cable channel.)

The draft proposal would switch the current system of vouchers and meters to pay stations where $5 would get a commuter 12 hours of parking. Permits would still be used. Parking would be free on weekends and holidays.

You may not have to go to the pay station itself to make a payment: The draft regulation includes a provision for paying electronically (by smart phone, for instance): "Payment to the pay station may be provided directly at said pay station or electronically using a mobile computing application sanctioned by the town for such purposes."

Parking in a handicapped space without "a bona fide handicapped emblem" could be costly, with a $50 fine -- and another $50 if it isn't paid within 15 days.
