Proposal Could Bring Mixed Martial Arts to CT

The state's Public Safety Committee will hold a public hearing on Tuesday to discuss proposed legislation that would legalize mixed martial arts in Connecticut, according to The Associated Press.

The committee previously approved the bill last year, but it wasn't passed. Mixed martial arts, which combines boxing, karate, judo and other forms fighting, can currently be seen by residents at and casinos, but if the bill is passed, matches would be permitted at arenas across the state, including Webster Bank Arena at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport.

"Would MMA events in Connecticut makes us some money? Sure. So would putting slot machines in the mall, but it doesn’t seem like a good idea," Patch columnist Matt Egan . "Hard economic times test who we are. We need to be better than this."

Patch user replied, "I think it should be legal and yes people do get hurt, but what about football, wrestling, basketball, field hockey, baseball and all other sports these are all potentially sports were you can cause injury, so should those sports be banned in this state?"
