Bravo Team 26!

This week we salute Team 26 and the entire Newtown community for continuing to keep a spotlight on the victims of the Sandy Hook shooting.

On the 14th of every month we at VolunteerSquare.com want to acknowledge individuals or groups giving back to the community in positive and meaningful ways. It’s our small gesture to help keep the memory of the victims of the Sandy Hook shooting alive.

This month, we’re dedicating the post to Team 26. On Tuesday of this week, 26 cyclists, one for every victim of the December 14th shooting, arrived in Washington, D.C. The 400 mile ride from Newtown to D.C. was organized by members of the Newtown community. Its goal was to persuade lawmakers on both sides of the aisle to take swift, common sense action on gun control.

Team 26 was not alone in this endeavor. Their action inspired support of all kinds from all corners, particularly from communities also directly affected by gun violence. For instance, members of the Virginia Tech cycling team joined forces to ride with Team 26 in solidarity. Pretty powerful stuff.

No matter where you fall on the gun control debate, we’re pretty sure you can get behind the countless ways this community has pulled together to support one another in the most horrific and gut-wrenching of circumstances.

To learn more about the team’s ride check out their Facebook page. The photos, videos and posts of support are incredibly moving and beautiful. Meantime, if you know an individual or group giving back to the community please be sure to let us know so we can share their story next month.
