Sort & Socialize with Person-to-Person & VolunteerSquare

Summer is unofficially over and it’s back to work, school and all those other responsibilities. But that doesn’t mean you don’t have time to volunteer. To that end, we are so excited to be partnering, once again, with our friends at Darien-based Person-to-Person on a unique volunteer event created specifically for those of you who want to volunteer but have a tough time finding room on the calendar.

Every Monday night that P2P offices are open, we gather in the clothing center to weed through the bags and bags of items generously donated to P2P. Mostly clothes, the items are inspected, sorted by type, sex and size and put out on “the floor” for P2P’s clothing center clients in need of season-appropriate necessities – from suits and sweaters to shoes and pajamas.

Next Monday September 9th we are restarting our volunteer event with a raffle, open house and tours of P2P’s Darien facility, snacks and plenty of clothes and odds and ends to sort. As it is, P2P’s clothing center relies on about 25 volunteers a day who help sort donations and usher clients through the center. P2P Social helps take a little of the edge off for the daily volunteers and staff.

That is, in fact, one of the things we love about the event. Volunteers can see results right away. Sorting through bags and bags of clothes may seem like a simple thing but when you see the items displayed neatly in the clothing center before closing up for the night you know someone will benefit almost immediately.

In addition to getting things done, the event is quickly becoming a hit with its loyal contingent of volunteers and is a melting pot of ages, interests and professions.

“We have a steady crew who wouldn't miss their Monday nights with us,” said Janet King, Director of Volunteers at P2P. ”There's a team spirit amongst our Monday night group - we share connections, stories, and truly enjoy each other's company.”

Come by and join us next Monday at P2P anytime from 6 to 8 p.m. All are welcome and no need to pre-register. If this isn’t the volunteer project for you, be sure to visit VolunteerSquare.com and sign up for our free e-alerts so we can keep you in the loop about volunteer projects that interest you.
