Volunteer for Your Career

Here at VolunteerSquare, we’re of the firm belief that everybody has something to contribute to agencies. Working in Fairfield County has introduced us to a tremendous variety of people, all of whom have one question: How can I help?

We’re here to answer that with the Volunteer Opportunities series, which draws on professions of all types to see how your job can contribute directly to your volunteering, in a very meaningful way that will only sharpen your career skills. Last week we spoke about using your tech savvy skills to help out an agency. This week, marketing!

So you’re a marketer by trade. Yours is a varied job, encompassing public relations, marketing strategy, social media marketing, and possibly even blogging. Given that marketers spend all of their time bringing in clients and money, how can that mindset be applied to a nonprofit, where sales goals aren’t the objective?

The answer is: A lot of ways!

Donor Relations: Marketers who specialize in new business can be ideal for connecting with and developing relations with donors. Donors are the financial lifeline of many nonprofits, and agencies will welcome marketers with open arms who can network with and ultimately bring in more donations.

Social Media Marketing: One of the most relied upon tools for nonprofits that can’t afford expensive TV or print advertisements is social media channels. Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube and Instagram are all common. Ask about them and discuss how you can apply your marketing experience towards these social platforms to raise awareness about the agency.

Newsletter Marketing: If your agency has a newsletter, consider offering copywriting, design, or overall strategy and planning.

Metrics and Analytics: Just as in business, in nonprofits, every donation, website click, and E-mail opt in need to be tracked. Your skills can help make heads and tails of the enormous amount of data available in Google Analytics alone to ensure the agency knows the results its getting from campaigns.

Public Relations: Depending on the size of your agency, they may not have an in-house public relations professional or primary point of contact with the media. This is a role you can fill very easily, especially if the agency needs to increase its own media exposure.
