Artist Helen Frankenthaler's Home Sold for $5.6 Million

The late Helen Frankenthaler was no starving artist in the end; her house and these others in Darien recently were sold, according to property transfer records.

The home of the late Abstract Expressionist artist Helen Frankenthaler on Contentment Island in Darien recently sold for $5,635,000, according to recently filed records in the Darien Town Clerk's Office.

Frankenthaler, an influential painter of abstract art, died in December 2011 at the age of 83 in her Darien home, where she had lived since 1999. Her full name was Helen Frankenthaler Dubrul.

Some of Frankenthaler's paintings were "seen as seminal works in the development of abstract expressionism," Reuters news service reported at the time of her death. Frankenthaler was awarded the National Medal of Arts in 2002.

Her home on Contentment Island Road was sold to a limited liability company -- Kiribilli 2 LLC, located at 490 Hollow Tree Ridge Rd., Darien. The property was sold on Sept. 18 and filed in the Darien Town Clerk's Office on Sept. 24. 

The property made Frankenthaler, or her estate, the 33rd biggest taxpayer in Darien, according to the BlockShopper Connecticut website.
