5 Minutes, 59 Seconds: Darien Track & Field Honors Andy Peña [Video]

Teammates, family, and friends gathered before the track team's season-opening meet against Wilton to honor the late freshman runner.

Members of the track and field program paused before their meet against Wilton on Thursday to honor freshman runner Andy Peña, who died suddenly on March 25.

With family and friends of Andy looking on, teammates held five minutes and fifty nine seconds of silence — a tribute to his goal of running a mile in under six minutes. The crowd began to applaud as the time wore down, cheering Andy onto the symbolic finish line.

Team members also wore special black shirts on Thursday emblazoned with the initials "AP." The boys team will continue wearing the shirts as warm-ups throughout the season.
