Englewood Students Audition For ‘Englewood Idol’

A student-run and organized fundraiser for the Dr. John Grieco Scholarship Fund, the competition will take place at bergenPAC in January.

More than 30 Englewood high school students auditioned recently for “Englewood Idol,” a talent show modeled after the popular TV program and “a major fundraiser” for the Dr. John Grieco Scholarship Fund, an academic class for students at Dwight Morrow High School and the Academies@Englewood in which students learn how to operate and promote a charitable institution, according to school officials.

The ninth through 12th grade contestants, who had to either live in or go to school in Englewood to be eligible, came from Dwight Morrow High School (DM), the Academies@Englewood (A@E), the Dwight-Englewood School (D-E) and Bergen Technical School in Teterboro.

Those who made the cut will compete in the “Englewood Idol” competition on Jan. 17 at bergenPAC.

They include A@E senior Jennie DeCastro, D-E junior Gina Marie Enriquez, A@E freshman Rebekah Han, D-E junior Nigel Lassiter, Bergen Tech senior Stephanie Nunez, D-E sophomore Melissa Rosner, DM junior Natalie Sanchez, DM junior Myshya Spencer, DM freshman Amy (Thomas) Blue, DM senior Tyler Vidale and A@E junior Fabiola Zapata, according to the school district.

The auditions were organized and filmed by students from the Dr. John Grieco Scholarship Fund and the Academies@Englewood’s IT Academy.

In addition to the academic class, the nonprofit Dr. John Grieco Scholarship Fund, which was established in 2004 as a tribute to the late Dr. John Grieco and is currently led by Social Studies teacher Judy Aronson, awards 16 scholarships annually to one male and one female student from each grade at Dwight Morrow High School and the Academies@Englewood with support from the Community Chest, individual donors and student fundraisers, according the Englewood school district.

This year’s “Englewood Idol” competition is Thursday, Jan. 17 at 7 p.m. at bergenPAC. For more information, visit the Englewood Idol website or call 201-294-0725.
