Fifth Grade Royle Teacher Arrested

The teacher faces a number of charges; a substitute teacher has taken his place.

A fifth grade teacher at Royle Elementary School, was arrested on Tuesday, March 23 in Stamford, Superintendent of Schools Don Fiftal confirmed.

"We did have a teacher who was arrested," said Fiftal, "and we have a sub filling in."

According to the Stamford Advocate, 32-year-old teacher was charged with third-degree assault, second-degree threatening, unlawful restraint and interfering with an emergency call on Tuesday, March 23. Friday's blotter notes the additional charge of simple trespass.

Further details are unknown at the time of this report.

Fiftal said it is premature to make decisions with regards to the man's future status as a district teacher but said the fifth grade teacher is "not due back between now and the end of the year."

A "very capable" substitute is filling in, said Fiftal. Parents of those students in the teacher's class have been notified.

"A letter was sent home explaining there would be a substitute and some of the background as to why," said Fiftal. "Each parent had the choice of how they were going to explain the situation to his or her child. As a district, we didn't address that."

Fiftal said it's too early to consider hiring a replacement for the teacher, but said the situation "will need to get resolved," before the beginning of 2011-2012 academic year.
