Letter: Silsby, Sullivan Want Edgerton Spot for Education

The Middlesex Middle School Neighborhood Association supports Sullivan and Silsby: "we commend them for highlighting as part of their platform the need to retain the Edgerton property for educational use."

To the editor:

The Middlesex Middle School Neighborhood Association (“MMSNA”) is a nonpartisan group focused on preserving and enhancing the community surrounding MMS. We are pleased to support Shannon Silsby and Callie Sullivan for the Board of Education.

Their forward-thinking and strong commitment to long-term planning is just what Darien needs.

Specifically, we commend them for highlighting as part of their platform the need to retain the Edgerton property for educational use.

As the ONLY significant town-owned land adjacent to a school, and consistent with the Town Plan of Conservation and Development, Darien must retain the Edgerton site for educational purposes to ensure flexibility for an unknown future.

MMS is approaching an over capacity situation and recent enrollment projections do not fully account for pending or unforeseeable future housing developments (e.g., Kensett, The Heights, Golden/Federal Realty property).

In addition, the site provides convenient parking for many school and extracurricular events, such as youth league games played on the lower MMS playing field.  With limited space for school expansion, now is the time to plan ahead.

In short, retaining the Edgerton property for Darien's educational needs is nothing more than common sense--and Silsby and Sullivan deserve election for thinking ahead to Darien’s future.
