Lynne Pierson Named Interim Darien Superintendent of Schools

Lynne Pierson, a former superintendent of schools in Wethersfield and Weston, has been appointed interim superintendent of schools for Darien, the Board of Education decided Tuesday.

The board voted unanimously on the recommendation of its personnel search committee to hire Pierson, who will start work on Tuesday, Nov. 19. Pierson will be involved in making some of the medium-term changes to Darien special education after the recommendations of the Gamm Report.

Here's the statement read by Sarah Schneider Zuro on behalf of the personnel search committee:

The personnel search ommittee of the Darien Board of Education has been hard at work to find an exceptional educator and school leader for our school community.

We are pleased to announce that the personnel search committee has identified Dr. Lynne Pierson for the position of interim superintendent of schools.

Dr. Pierson is an experienced and accomplished educator and school leader. She brings to our school system tremendous knowledge and experience in special education and school administration from her more than 40-year career.

Dr. Pierson began her teaching career as a special educator in 1971. She went on to be a director of special education services to the students of the Evanston/Skokie [Illinois] school system.

In addition to her background and knowledge of special education, Dr. Pierson is experienced in the administration of school systems. She was an assistant superintendent for personnel and administration for the South Windsor school district, establishing its human resources department.

Finally, Dr. Pierson is an accomplished and passionate school leader. She served as a superintendent of schools for Wethersfield, CT from 1995 to 2002, and for the Weston Public Schools from 2002 to 2007.

Although Dr. Pierson officially retired from Connecticut school administration in 2007, she continued her passion for education by being a key participant in the educational reform initiatives in the United Emirates through her work for the Abu Dhabi Education Council.

The board is grateful to Dr. Pierson for her willingness to lead the Darien Public Schools and for her enthusiasm and passion for improving educational outcomes for children.

The board also wishes to thank Timothy Canty, acting superintendent of schools, for his dedication, professionalism and leadership during this school year. Dr. Pierson will officially join the Darien Public Schools on Nov. 19, 2013 and we know the entire schoo community will be eager to meet and welcome Dr. Pierson.
