School Board Chair's Remarks at DHS Graduation

Good Afternoon, Senior Class, Administrators, Faculty, Parents, Family, and Friends, on behalf of my fellow members of the Darien Board of Education, welcome to the Graduation Ceremony for the Class of 2013.

It is my privilege to stand before you on this beautiful afternoon, to begin the celebration of the remarkable achievements of this exceptional senior class.  You are a gifted group of individuals who leave Darien High School with a wide range of talents that will be shared with your next community.

While this is a celebration of the achievements of our Graduating class there are a community of people that have stood behind and supported them through the years.

I would like to thank Principal Arlene Gottesman for stepping in and bringing her enthusiasm and heart to our community this year.  She was a ubiquitous presence in our high school, from athletic events, to concerts and even the occasional Board of Education meeting.  Driving by Darien High School every morning and afternoon and seeing Ms. Gottesman standing on the front steps, greeting each student by name, was an extraordinary and comforting site.  Thank you for your dedication to our students and we wish you the best in your retirement or knowing you, next adventure.

Ms. Gottesman did not do it alone, thank you to all of the dedicated teachers and staff at Darien High School as well as our Administrative team, our Athletic Director Mr. Mike Sullivan, our Assistant Principals, Mrs. Ellen Sparks, and Dr. Jake Greenwood. To Mrs. Ellen Dunn, the new Principal of Darien High School, we wish Mrs. Dunn success in her new role and are excited to see her take the Number 1 High School in the State of Connecticut to the next level.

It takes a village and we need to extend our thanks to our Superintendent, Dr. Stephen Falcone, our Central Office Administrators and the Administration, Teachers and Staff at all of the Darien Schools who have nurtured these students to help contribute to the fine young adults we have before us today.

We are incredibly grateful to the community of Darien who continues to support our schools, through their fiscal commitment to the education of our children and for the many parent volunteers who help round out our successful academic community.

A special thank you to our Parents and guardians, you trusted us with your children, not just academically, but by supporting them, which created successful, mature adults who are ready to move on in their exciting journey.

To the Class of 2013, you have each achieved a great deal in your years at Darien High School and you have each left your mark on our town.  You are now moving forward to your new community.  Take the lessons that you have learned in Darien and become an active contributing member of your new community.  Be successful on this new journey, and remember to bring back to Darien the new and creative things that you have learned.  Stop by and share your new knowledge with your fellow students who are eagerly looking forward to their new adventure.

The Darien Board of Education and the Community of Darien wish you, the Class of 2013, our heartfelt congratulations and Best Wishes on your graduation from Darien High School.

Go out and do something remarkable!
