STOP Common Core NY Holds Forum Saturday

STOP Common Core, a statewide group in New York dedicated to changing the Common Core standards program, which has also been adopted in Connecticut, is holding a forum in Westchester County on Saturday.

By Liz Giegerich

A parent advocacy group dedicated to ending Common Core standards in New York State is holding a half-day forum on Saturday, Sept. 21 to inform the community on their mission.

The group of parents and teachers believes that “the Common Core State Standards prematurely claim to enhance the critical thinking skills of students in PreK-12th grade and prepare them for the 21st century global economy.” A Port Chester couple, Yvonne Gasperino and Glen Dalgleish, organized the local forum. The STOP Common Core organization is a state-wide group dedicated to changing the program.

The Common Core Standards Initiative is country-wide; it seeks to provide a “consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them,” according to the Common Core website. The standards are meant to prepare students better for the “real word,” by teaching them to understand concepts in a different way than students have been required to understand them in the past.

The STOP group believes that Common Core promotes a “one-size-fits-all” approach that neglects special education and gifted students.

The forum is being held at the Renaissance Westchester Hotel in West Harrison from 1 to 5 p.m. and will include a panel of education experts from a wide spectrum of groups across the nation. They include Jamie Gass, director of the Center for School Reform at the Pioneer Institute, Neal McCluskey, associate director of the Cato Center for Educational Freedom, Emmett McGroarty, executive director of the Preserve Innocence Initiative at the American Principles Project, Sheila Kaplan, founder of EducationalNewYork.com and Christopher Tienken, assistant professor, Seton Hall University.

Here is a New York Times article by Kenneth Change published Sept. 3, 2013 that covers the issue of Common Core from a perspective different than that of the STOP Common Core group.

STOP Common Core News Release

Port Chester, New York
—STOP Common Core in New York State, a parent advocacy group, has organized a half-day forum on Saturday, Sept. 21, to inform, equip and empower parents regarding the “real facts” of the newly implemented educational mandate in New York State and the future of their children’s education, known as the Common Core State Standards.

The group, consisting of parents and teachers, was established by a concerned Port Chester couple, Yvonne Gasperino and Glen Dalgleish. The parents of two have put together a power-packed forum of national speakers and experts who are well-versed in the challenges and short-comings of the new education mandate.

Not validated by educators and yet already adopted by 45 states, the Common Core State Standards prematurely claims to enhance the critical thinking skills of students in PreK-12th grade and prepare them for the 21st century global economy.

This free event is open to the public and is intended to inform the community of the negative impact these new standards will have on education in general, its effect on the future education and careers of students, and the debilitating costs associated with its implementation and loss of New York’s educational sovereignty.

It will also address the “one-size-fits-all” approach of the nation's educational system for all students, as well as the mandate's omission on providing for special education and gifted students alike.

The forum is being held at the Renaissance Westchester Hotel in West Harrison and will include a panel of education experts from a wide spectrum of groups across the nation.

"This is a great opportunity for New York parents to hear from a panel of national experts on the ramifications of Common Core and how this will impact their children's future," says Gasperino.  "Parents know that their children are NOT COMMON, so why should their education be?"

The event will take place between 1 and 5 p.m. Doors open at 12:30 p.m. The Renaissance Westchester Hotel is located at 80 West Red Oak Lane in West Harrison. For more information on the event and the group, visit www.StopCommonCoreinNewYork.com
