Should you do work for free or give away free stuff?

In recent months, there have been a couple of times when Sea Glass Communications has been approached to donate PR work or social media consulting as a silent auction item to benefit a local charity. We've had to turn a few of these opportunities down, although we were flattered to be asked. We simply were stretched too thin. Now that we have been moving and grooving for about 8 months, we have a better grip on things, even though our client base keeps growing. So we recently spent an hour on the phone advising a established non-profit based in Boston as to how to get more media coverage and hopefully more donations. And we recently said yes when a local non-profit approached us to help them craft a press-release. This project will only take us about three hours to do. And it's something we are doing during our off-hours, so our client-time won't be affected. This is also a cause that is near and dear to our hearts. When our clients are approached to donate goods and services, we have them use a checklist to evaluate whether or not it's worth it: do they need the goodwill in the community? will it add stress financially? do they have the time or product to back up the commitment? have they made contributions in the past and do they track the benefits they get back to their business? is the organization something that resonates with their business? do they care whether or not they get credit for helping out? are they better off participating in the future? We are doing this pro-bono project pretty-much under the radar, and that's just fine with us. We know it's important to give back to the community, and we hope we can find meaningful ways to make an impact when we can swing it. Check out the link to an amazing non-profit. This is the one we had a recent phone advisory session about. http://buildingbridgesworldwide.org/
