Darien Baseball Beats McMahon, 3-2

Darien High School's baseball team edged out McMahon on Thomas Carruthers' walk-off double during Wednesday's home game.

In a taut 3-2 victory over Brien McMahon Wednesday, the Blue Wave's Thomas Carruthers hit a walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh to drive in Mike Stovall with the game-winning run.

McMahon has had a good season with a 9-4 won-lost record going into the game. Their shortstop, UConn-bound Bryan Daniello (considered the best player in the state), is hitting .533.

McMahon starter Ricardo Torres went the distance giving up two earned runs on seven hits. Darien starter Mackenzie Glavin pitched five innings giving up two runs on six hits and Johnny Dehlin got the win pitching the final two innings without allowing a hit.

Darien started the scoring with two outs in the first when Sam Gillespie and Alex Yergey hit back to back doubles. The Blue Wave tacked on another run in the second when Tucker White reached on an error, stole second, and scored on a single to center by Stovall.

McMahon didn't answer until the fourth inning. With one out Dennis Warfield hit a home run to left-center. A single, force out, and another single put runners on first and third with two outs.

The second run scored on a wild pitch and a walk put runners on first and second. Glavin bore down and struck out the next batter. In the fifth inning McMahon threatened again.

Jamie Restivo delivered a leadoff single but with one out catcher Sam Gillespie threw him out trying to steal. Following another hit Glavin struck out Warfield to end the inning.  

Dehlin came on to pitch in the sixth and shut down McMahon for the next two innings. With the score still tied 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh Mike Stovall hit a one out line drive double to left for his second hit.

Carl Stowall drew a walk and Carruthers drove the ball to the fence in center field for a double bringing home Stovall for the win.

Darien goes for their third straight win, starting 4 p.m. Friday at home against Norwalk.
