Darien Girls Fall to Top Seed Danbury In FCIAC Girls Basketball Playoffs

Blue Wave drops to 12-9 following a 63-40 defeat to the undefeated Hatters

The Darien girls basketball team kept it close for awhile.

In the end, however, top seed Danbury was a bit too much for the Blue Wave and advanced to the semifinals of the FCIAC playoffs with a 63-40 victory on Saturday.

Darien (12-9) battled the Hatters (21-0)  to a 25-25 tie at halftime, but Dambury began to pull away in the second half. It built a 39-34 lead after the third quarter, then broke open the game in the fourth period, outscoring Darien by a 24-6 margin.

Darien was within in 40-38 when Danbury began its game-ending 23-2 run.

The Hatters will face No. 4 seed Wilton, a 49-47 winner over No. 5 Norwalk, in the second game of Tuesday's semifinal doubleheader at Fairfield Ludlowe (7:30 p.m.).

Darien, which was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the FCIAC playoffs for the second straight year, now prepares for the Class L state tournament.

Rebecca (24) and Rebecc Gartner (16) combined for 40 points for the Hatters while Casey Smith added 13.

For Darien, Kate Bushell and Meg Marren led the way with 12 and 10 points, respectively.  Kelly Karczewski  chipped in with nine.

The Blue Wave actually led 32-29 early in the third quarter, but Danbury began to take over by finishing the quarter with  10-2 spurt.
