Darien Girls Second in FCIAC Indoor Track Championship

Darien kicker Chris Smith has signed a National Letter of Intent to continue his football career at Elon University in North Carolina.
Smith earned all-FCIAC first-team honors last season as a place kicker after earning the same honor in 2010 as the Blue Wave's punter.

Last season, Smith averaged 31 yards per punt and scored 35 points with five field goals and 20 extra points. He also handled Darien's kickoff duties.
Elon went 5-6 last season as a member of the Southern Conference in the Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA).

Thegirls indoor track team finished second Thursday at the FCIAC championship at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven.
Catherine Lacy led the effort for the Blue Wave with a trio of top-three finishes, highlighted by a victory in the long jump (17-09.00). Lacy also finished third in the 55-meter dash (7.54) and third in the high jump (5-00).
Grace Loh placed second in the 3,200-meters (3:01.78), finishing behind Greenwich's Abby Markowitz. who helped the Cardinals win their first overall team title since 1990.
Darien's Jleah Hotchkiss finished second in the high jump (5-00) and Jessica Thornbury placed third in the pole vault (9-00).
The Darien boys finished sixth and had a pair of runner-up efforts as Nicholas Lombardo won a silver in the long jump (20-08.50) and Will Lotchefeld finished second in the shot put (44-02.25).

The Darien girls basketball team looks to keep pace in the crowded FCIAC playoff race on Friday when the Blue Wave visits Norwalk in a critical game (5:45 p.m.).
Darien (9-6, 8-5) and Norwalk (10-5, 8-5) are among six teams tied for sixth place in the FCIAC. The longjam also includes Stamford, Staples, Fairfield Warde and Westhill.
Westhill plays at Staples on Friday, so that group will be paired to at least four teams. Fairfield Warde, meanwhile, has a tough game at Trinity Catholic, which holds the fifth spot in the standings, and Stamford hosts New Canaan.
Darien is coming off a pair of easy wins, including Tuesday's 50-34 victory over McMahon, but Friday begins a tough four-game stretch for the Blue Wave, who will face Wilton, Stamford and Warde over the next two weeks.
Norwalk is coming off a huge victory to stay in the thick of the playoff race as the Bears upset St. Joseph 50-39 in Trumbull on Tuesday.
Darien has to contend with Norwalk's tandem of Emma Oyomba and Erica Cohens. Oyomba scored 30 points in a 69-54 victory over New Canaan on Jan. 27 and Cohens had 22 against St. Joseph.
The Darien (2-12, 1-11) boys host Norwalk at 7 p.m.. The Bears (8-6, 6-6) nearly upset top-ranked and undefeated St. Joseph on Wednesday before
falling short, 50-45.
Darien is coming off a 51-36 loss to McMahon.

The deadline for the Connecticut Sports Writers’ Alliance Bohdan Kolinsky Memorial Journalism Scholarship is Monday, Feb. 6.
The scholarship is open to Connecticut high school seniors who aspire to careers in sports journalism. Named for the longtime scholastic sports editor of the Hartford Courant who passed away in 2003, the award provides the winner $1,000 for freshman-year college study and a chance to receive increased aid in succeeding years by meeting certain standards
