The following update is a news release by Sandy Burke of Athena Public Relations:

The athletes of the 2012 Darien High School Boys Indoor Track and Field Team continue to post strong performances in the field, as well as sprint and distance running events.  The Blue Wave extended its solid season, this time at the FCIAC Qualifying Meet at Staples held Saturday, January 7 against conference rivals Central and Harding High Schools (Bridgeport), New Canaan, Staples and Stamford’s Westhill High Schools.

Highlights of the Staples meet included first place finishes for the Blue Wave in the 4x240 sprint relay, seconds in the high jump, long jump, sprint medley relay and 600M dash, and a 2-5 sweep of the 1600M run.  The 4x240 team of senior co-captain Corey Eppley, senior co-captain Matt Pik, Spencer McMullin and Harlan Smith had a blistering sub-two minute time of 1:59.9, for a #1 finish.  Sophomore Nick Lombardo had another outstanding meet, taking second in both the High Jump (6-0) and the Long Jump (18-8.75).

Darien athletes also had great sprint performances, with Pik taking second in the 600M Sprint (1:28.6) and sophomore Brian Davey placing third in the 1000, with a time of 2:49.7.  Davey also placed second – this time with teammates Billy Siemers, Will Ardery and Bryan Previte – in the Sprint Medley Race, with a time of 4:15.

The Blue Wave dominated in distance events, too, with an impressive 2-5 sweep of the 1600M race.  Co-captain Michael Johnston placed second (4:53); senior co-captain Charlie Baird came in third in 4:56; senior Eli Converse finished fourth (4:59); and freshman Alex Ostberg finished a close 5th in 4:59.4.

DHS head coach Tyson Kaczmarek saw a lot to like at the meet.  “Our guys continue to step up, and the Staples Meet was no exception. Our sophomore jumper Nick Lombardo had a really terrific meet, as did Matt Pik and Brian Davey.  All the guys are working hard, and it shows.”
