Darien Scores and Standings, July 25

Patch's daily digest of Darien sports.

UPDATES

• Soccer: Nicolae Piperea has resigned as the Darien boys soccer coach, the Blue Wave Sports Blog reports.

Piperea won 18 games in his five seasons at Darien, and the Blue Wave managed just a 2-7-6 record last year. He did lead Darien to the FCIAC playoffs and state tournament in 2008, however.

"I will work closely with my former assistant coaches to make the transition as smooth as possible," Piperea told the blog.

Soccer practice begins in mid-August with the Blue Wave hosting their first scrimmage on Sept. 3. The regular season opens Sept. 14 at Westhill.

• Baseball: Andrew Enzor pitched a no-hitter as the Darien 13-year olds defeated Easton 15-1 on Saturday in I-84 summer league play. Enzor struck out five.

Michael O'Malley led Darien's 14-hit attack with a double, home run and five RBI.

Jake Frasca, Jamie Schofield and Drew Costantino all had two hits apiece while Enzor, Tyler Costantino, Brian Walsh, Stephen Barston, Jack O'Neill and Danny O'Boyle each contributed one.

The Darien 13's played their final regular-season game on Sunday at Newtown before beginning the I-84 League playoffs on Monday. Many of the players on the team played for the Darien squad that lost to New Milford in the finals of the Babe Ruth state tournament.

• Diving: Darien's Elizabeth Fitzpatrick recently competed in the summer Junior Zone A diving championships in Rockville, Md. She took second on the 1-meter board and fourth on the 3-meter board in the girls 14-15 division.

Fitzpatrick swims for the Whirlwind Diving team, which placed second in the team competition with 186 points, only training the Montgomery Dive Club (228).

Whirlwind, based in New Canaan, won the women's division with 91 points and placed third in the men's division with 95.

Darien's Timoty Luz was eighth in the 1-meter and 3-meter in the boys 12-13 age division.

Nine members of the team will compete in the Age Group National Championships, which begin July 29 in Knoxville, Tenn.

Golf: The 77th Connecticut Open got under way Monday morning at the Brooklawn Country Club in Fairfield. The club is hosting the tournament for the sixth time, having previously been the site of the event in 1935, 1938, 1958, 1973 and 1991.

Defending champion Kyle Gallo of Kensington is looking to become the first five-time winner of the tournament.  He is coming off an impressive victory at the Massachusetts Open Championship.

The 130-player field includes a number of local players, including Stamford's  Mike Ballo Jr., who was the runner-up in the Massachusetts Open Club.

Also entered is recent New England Amateur champion Jeff Hedden of the Black Hall Club.

Other area players include Greenwich's Daniel Balin and David Pastore, Darien's Mike Ballo Jr. and Greg Reilly, Norwalk's Jerry Courville, Weston's Bernie D'Amato, Westport's John Gentile, Wilton's Brian and John Murphy and Fairfield's Brad Worthington.
