Darien Scores and Standings, July 5

Little League Softball: The Darien 12-year-old softball team won its second straight District I championship with a 10-0 victory over Ridgefield on Sunday.

Darien, which went 6-0 in the tournament and outscored its opponents 77-15, advances to the Section I tournament, which begins Thursday at Unity Park in Trumbull. Darien faces Seymour in its first game in the sectionals (5:30 p.m.).

Danbury is hosting the state tournament at Hatters Park from July 16-18, with the Connecticut state champ advancing to the regionals in Bristol.

This is the first year that the regional headquarters around the country will host the girls regional Little League Softball Championships.

Babe Ruth Baseball: Darien has teams entered in the U-13, U-14 and U-15 Babe Ruth District One tournaments that will take place this week. Here is the schedule for each tournament, which is a three-team affair involving Darien, Greenwich and Stamford:

13s (all games at Darien High School):

  • Tuesday: Greenwich vs. Darien, 5:30 p.m.
  • Wednesday: Darien vs. Stamford, 5:30 p.m.
  • Thursday: Stamford vs. Greenwich, 5:30 p.m.
  • Top two advance to two-out-of-three final:
  • Friday: Game 1, 5:30 p.m.
  • Saturday: Game 2, 11 a.m.; Game 3, 1 p.m. (if necessary)

 

14s (all games at Byrum Field, Greenwich)

  • Tuesday: Stamford vs. Greenwich, 5:30 p.m.
  • Wednesday: Greenwich vs. Darien, 5:30 p.m.
  • Thursday: Darien vs. Stamford, 5:30 p.m.
  • Top two advance to two-out-of-three final:
  • Friday: Game 1, 5:30 p.m.
  • Saturday: Game 2, 10 a.m.
  • Sunday: Game 3, 10 a.m. (if necessary)

 

15s (all games at Cubeta Stadium, Stamford)

  • Tuesday: Darien vs. Stamford, 7 p.m.
  • Wednesday: Stamford vs. Greenwich, 7 p.m.
  • Thursday: Greenwich vs. Darien, 5 p.m.
  • Top two advance to two-out-of-three final:
  • Friday: Game 1, 8 p.m.
  • Saturday: Game 2, 5 p.m.
  • Sunday: Game 3, 5:30 p.m. (if necessary)

 

Little League Baseball: Darien National is back in action Tuesday in the District One 12-year-old Little League tournament against Ridgefield National at Wilton's Bill Terry Field (5:30 p.m.). National (1-2) defeated Stamford Federal 13-3 on Sunday for its first win in pool play.

American, which is atop pool B, improved to 3-0 in round robin play with a 6-3 victory over Weston on Sunday, It is off until Thursday, when it faces Norwalk at McGuane Field at 5:45 p.m.

In the 10-11 baseball, Darien National won its first game with a 6-4 win over Stamford American on Friday and plays again on Tuesday against Ridgefield American at Stamford's Scalzi Park (5:30 p.m.).

Darien American, which opened with a 5-3 loss to Stamford's National Lione on Friday, is off until Thursday when it takes on Norwalk at Norwalk's Veteran Park (5:45 p.m.).

In the 10-year-old division, Darien National is 4-1 and Darien American 2-2 in pool play. Darien National is tied for second with Norwalk in pool B, just behind Wilton, which is 4-0.

Football: The Darien football team will participate in the third annual Grip It & Rip It Passing Tournament, which is being hosted by New Canaan on Saturday.

As of June 30, 24 teams had committed, including several from the FCIAC: Bridgeport Central, Darien, Greenwich, New Canaan, Norwalk, Stamford, Staples and Fairfield Warde.

Other schools include Masuk — which ended New Canaan's three-year state title title reign last year and features Casey Cochran, the top quarterback in the state — as well as Cheshire, Bloomfield, Brookfield, Newtown and Weston.

The event is designed to provide each team a minimum of four games in a competitive, non-contact environment. Last year, all teams that made it to semifinals advanced to the semifinals of the state tournament: Darien, Masuk, New Canaan and Trumbull.

Each team is guaranteed four games, not including playoffs. Round robin play runs 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. Following a lunch break, playoffs begin at 1 p.m.

Trumbull defeated New Canaan in last year's final.
