Babe Ruth: The Darien Babe Ruth 13-year-old All-Stars advanced to the District 1 finals with a 16-4 win over Stamford on Thursday. The game was shortened to five innings due to the mercy rule.

Darien’s 14-hit onslaught was led by Jamie Schofield (single, double and triple), Andrew Enzor (three singles), Tyler Costantino (single and double), Stephen Barston (two singles) and Michael O”Malley (triple and three RBI).

Jack O’Neill laid down two beautiful sacrifice bunts early in the game to get the offense rolling. Craig Miller chipped in with a single and three RBI and Enzo Stefanoni added a single and two RBI.

Jake Frasca went the distance on the mound,  striking out four and and only giving up three hits. He also added a single and two RBI at the plate.

The District 1 finals will begin on Friday at 5:30 at Darien High School. Darien will take on the winner of Thursdays Stamford-Greenwich game in a best-of-three series.

Softball: Darien will represent District One in the 12-year-old sectional softball tournament that gets under away Thursday at Trumbull's Unity Field.

Darien went 6-0 in District One play, outscoring its opponents by a 77-15 margin, including a 10-0 victory over Ridgefield in the title game on Sunday.

Darien opens the sectionals on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. against Seymour, the District Three champion.

Danbury will host the state championship July 16-18 at Hatters Park for the right to go to Bristol for the East Regional tournament.

Babe Ruth Baseball:  Greenwich defeated Darien 4-2 Wednesday to advance to the finals of the 14-year-old District Four Babe Ruth tournament.

Darien will take on Stamford on Thursday (5:30 p.m., Darien High School) to determine Stamford's opponent in the best-of-three finals.

In the 15s Wednesday, Stamford dubbed Greenwich 15-4 to reach the finals, also a two-out-of-three series. Stamford was coming off a 14-0 win over Darien on Tuesday.

Darien and Greenwich will clash on Thursday (5 p.m., Cubeta Stadium) for the right to get another crack at Stamford in the finals.

Little League Baseball: Darien American and Nationl are back in action Thursday in the District One 12-year-old Little League tournament.

American, which is 3-0 and tied with Wilton for first place in pool B, faces Norwalk at McGuane Field at 5:45 p.m.

National, which is 2-2 in pool play, is back in action on Thursday against Weston at Wilton's Bill Terry Field (5:30 p.m.).

American can assure itself a spot in the semifinals by winning two of its final three games in pool. Its remaining games are against Wilton on Saturday and Ridgefield National (1-2) on Sunday.

Iron Man: Darien residents Craig Jeffers, Brian Oliver, Geoff Benson, Craig Jones Peter Markham and Kevin Schwartz are among the more than 1,300 athletes from 20 countries and 40 states who will compete in the 2011 Amica Ironman 70.3 Rhode Island.

The fourth annual event, set for Sunday's consists of a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike, and 13.1-mile run.

Participants — both amateurs and professionals ranging in age from 18 to 74— will travel from as far away as Chile, the U.K., Hong Kong and Australia to compete in this unique event, which will showcase Blackstone Valley, Providence and its surrounding communities. More than 100 athletes from Rhode Island are also expected to participate.

A professional field consisting of some of the sport’s top contenders will vie for the title, including Viktor Zyemtsev, Tim Berkel, Philip Graves, Magali Tisseyre and Amanda Stevens, among others.

The race offers a professional prize purse of $15,000 and 50 coveted age group qualifying slots to the 2011 Marine Corps Ironman World Championship 70.3, taking place on Sept. 11 at Lake Las Vegas in Henderson, Nev.
