Darien Boys Soccer Falls to Bunnell, 3-1

• Boys soccer: A stellar first season for the Darien boys soccer team under coach Jon Bradley ended Wednesday with a 3-1 loss to Bunnell in the quarterfinals of the Class LL state tournament.

The Blue Wave were beaten by arguably the best player in the state as Zach Zurita scored his 38th and 39th goals for the fourth-seeded Bulldogs (18-2-2).

After Zurita scored on a penalty kick with 10 minutes left in the first half,  Elliot Helgans tied it for the Blue Wave three minutes into the second.

The score remained unchanged until Andrew Gorman tallied the tiebreaker with under seven minutes remaining.  Zurita added an insurance marker with under two minutes left.

Bunnell, which lost to New Canaan in last year's final, advanced to the semifinals to face top seed Wethersfield on Saturday. Wethersfield advanced with a 2-1 overtime over Brookfield.

After going just 2-6-7 last year, Darien posted a 14-3-3 record this season, which included a third-place finish in the FCIAC, a trip to the semifinals of the league playoffs and two wins in the state tournament. The 14 victories surpassed Darien's combined total from 2007-10. 

Girls swimming: Darien won the Class L championship Wednesday night at Wesleyan University.

The Blue Wave (839) finished 150 points ahead of runner-up New Canaan (689), which was followed by Cheshire (648) and Pomperaug (471).

Amanda Bieler (200-yard freestyle) and Caroline Orem (100-yard backstroke) had first-place finishes for the Blue Wave. Orem also finished second in the 200-yard IM and Bieler had a third-place showing in the 100-yard freestyle.

• Field hockey: Darien's game against FCIAC rival and No. 4 seeed Wilton in the semifinals of the Class M state tournament was postponed until Thursday.

The contest will be played at New Canaan at 7 p.m. The winner will face either No. 6 Barlow or No. 7 Branford in the state finals on Saturday at Wethersfield.

Darien (19-1) is seeking its fifth consecutive state championship. The Blue Wave did have their 93-game unbeaten streak, the third-longest in high school field hockey history, snapped by Staples in the FCIAC semifinals

Girls volleyball: Darien is one win away from an 11th consecutive trip to the state finals.

The top-seeded Blue Wave advanced to the Class LL semifinals with a 3-1 (25-17, 25-13, 25-27, 25-22) win over No. 8 Glastonbury on Tuesday night at Darien High School.

Darien, which improved to 23-0, will take on No. 4 Southington in the semifinals on Thursday at Milford's Foran High School at 5 p.m. The Blue Knights advanced with a 3-0 (26-24, 25-11, 25-18) victory over FCIAC finalist Ridgefield.

The Blue Wave were tested a bit on Tuesday, dropping the third game after winning the first two. In the fourth set, Glastonbury closed within 23-22 before Darien won the next two points ti close out the match.

Last season, the Blue Wave were dethroned as nine-time state champions, falling to East Lyme 3-0 in the Class L final. Darien moved up a class for this season.

In Thursday's other semifinal, to be played at Foran at 7:30 p.m., No. 2 Cheshire will take on No. 3 Newtown seed
