• Boys soccer: Darien's dream of an FCIAC championship ended Wednesday as the third-seeded Blue Wave suffered a 3-1 loss to No. 2 seed Trumbull in the semifinals at Fairfield Ludlowe.

The Blue Wave, who enjoyed stellar 11-2-3 regular season under first-year coach Jon Bradley after going 2-6-7 last year, now prepare for the Class LL state tournament.

Trumbull will take on Staples in Friday's final. The Wreckers, who are seeking their fourth consecutive FCIAC title and 28th in school history, advanced with a 1-0 win over New Canaan on penalty kicks (3-2 penalty kicks).

The championship game is set for Friday at 7 p.m. at Fairfield Ludlowe.

Matt O'Brien, Andrew Stratton and Keith Bond scored for the Eagles, who improved to 13-1-4. Darien was blanked until Marcus Iqbal scored in the final two minutes to prevent the shutout.

The Blue Wave appeared to take a 1-0 lead midway through the first half, but a goal was waived off due to an offside call.

• Field hockey: After a 16-0 regular season, the Blue Wave received a scare Wednesday as they were held scoreless in the first half by No. 8 seed Westhill.

However, Claire Culliton, Galen Rohn, Lydia Ruhlin all scored in the second half as Darien rolled on with a 3-0 victory over the upset-minded Vikings.

The Blue Wave, which has not lost a game since 2007, will take on Staples, a 2-1 winner over Stamford, in Thursday's first semifinal at New Canaan at 5 p.m.

In the second semifinal at 7 p.m., No. 6 New Canaan faces No. 2 Wilton. The Rams upset No. 3 Norwalk 1-0 and the Warriors advanced with a 4-0 win over No. 7 Fairfield Ludlowe.

• Girls volleyball: The FCIAC girls volleyball playoffs begin Thursday. Here are the quarterfinal matchups:

  • No. 8 Fairfield Ludlowe at No. 1 Darien, 4 p.m.
  • No. 7 Danbury vs. No. 2 Ridgefield, at Staples, 6 p.m.
  • No. 6 Stamford at No. 3 Staples, 4 p.m.
  • No. 5 Greenwich at No. 4 New Canaan, 4 p.m.

• Girls swimming: The FCIAC swimming and diving finals will begin on Thursday with the diving trials at Greenwich at 4 p.m.

The diving finals will take place at 5 p.m. on Friday at Westhill, followed by the swimming finals on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Greenwich.

• Cross country: The state Open meet, scheduled for Friday at Manchester's Wickham Park, has been postponed until next Tuesday, according to the CIAC.

The site of the meet also has been changed as the girls and boys races now will be take place at at Hammonasset State Park in Madison. The boys will start at 1:45 p.m., followed by the girls at 2:30 p.m.

Darien won the Class L boys championship on Saturday at Wickham Park, which is unavailable for the state Open because of damage it suffered in Saturday's snowstorm.

The Open competition will determine which runners qualify for the  New England championships Nov. 12 at Ponaganset High School in North Scituate, R.I.
