Darien Scores and Standings, Nov. 8

Patch's daily digest of Darien sports

UPDATES

• Cross country: Darien will be well-represented in the state Open cross country meet, set for Tuesday at Hammonasset Park in Madison. The boys race starts at 1:45 p.m with the girls going off at 2:30 p.m.

The state Open meet originally was scheduled for Friday at Manchester's Wickham Park but was postponed. The site was moved because Wickham Park suffered damage in the recent snowstorm and the CIAC determined it couldn't host the event.

The Darien boys team recently won the Class L title, its second state championship in three years afer capturing the Class MM title in 2009.

Darien put three of its runners in the top eight and five in the top 15.

Finishing first for Darien and fifth overall was co-captain Michael Johnston, who posted a time of 16:44. Second for Darien and sixth overall was co-captain Charlie Baird in 16:50.

Another co-captain, Michael Coe, who returned after a recent illness, placed third for Darien and eighth overall in a time of 16:55.

Sophomore Marshall Huffman (17:07) finished fourth for Darien and 12th overall while freshman Alex Ostberg was the Blue Wave’s No. 5 finisher and 17th overall (17:16).

Completing Darien's contingent were sophomore Peter Kreuch (31st, 17:43) and co-captain Eli Converse (45th, 17:58).

Darien finished fourth in the Class L girls race, placing five runners in the top 40, headed by Grace Loh, who was third overall (19:50).

Darien's other top finishers were: Ellen Bauer (26th), McKinley Stauffer (30th), Sarah Colon (39th) and Katie Farren (40th).

• Football: New Canaan's 36-29 loss to Stamford on Saturday — the Rams' first defeat to the Black Knights in 40 years — has left five teams, including Darien, with at least a mathematical chance to play in the FCIAC championship game.

Howewer, since the Blue Wave (who host winless Bassick on Saturday) are ranked last among those teams, they would have to be considered the longest of long shots. For Darien to get back to McDougall Stadium for the second year in a row, Greenwich, New Canaan, and Norwalk would all have to lose again.

And of those three squads, only Greenwich (at Danbury on Thursday) is facing an opponent with a winning record.

New Canaan hosts Trumbull (2-4) on Friday and Norwalk entertains winless Fairfield Ludlowe (0-8) on Saturday.

The health of New Canaan quarterback Matt Milano could be a concern after he suffered a possible concussion against Stamford. However, New Canaan coach Lou Marinelli told the Stamford Advocate on Saturday night that his quarterback had a migraine headache and should be okay.

The biggest benefactor from New Canaan's loss to Stamford was Greenwich, which climbed to second in the FCIAC rankings and can clinch a berth in the title game with a win at Danbury.

Since the Cardinals play early, they would have luxury of sitting back and awaiting their opponent (probably Staples).

While the Wreckers will be without top rusher Joey Zelkowitz (shoulder separation), they only need to beat winless Westhill on Saturday to clinch a berth in the FCIAC championship game.

Even if the Wreckers somehow lose to the Vikings, they may still have enough bonus points to qualify.

Here are the rankings after the weekend:

  • 1. Staples (7-0) 131.3
  • 2. Greenwich (7-0) 122.5
  • 3. New Canaan (7-1) 115.6
  • 4. Norwalk (6-1) 112.5
  • 5. Darien (7-1) 110.0

If Greenwich loses at Danbury, New Canaan can sneak back in with a win over Trumbull. Norwalk needs losses by Greenwich and New Canaan.

• Junior football: Nine Darien teams have advanced in the Fairfield County Football League playoffs. Because of last week's postponements, quarterfinal games in each age bracket will be played on Tuesday and Wednesday to complete the playoffs before Thanksgiving. Semifinal games are set for this weekend will the finals scheduled for next weekend.
