Darien Scores and Standings, Oct. 10

Patch's daily digest of Darien sports.

UPDATES

• Cross country: The Darien boys cross country team continued its season of dominating victories and huge wins with its initial first-place finish at the Wickham Invitational championship level race.

With a meet low score of 123, the Blue Wave defeated 15 teams from Connecticut, New Hampshire and Rhode Island in the championship race, facing teams with at least an 80 percent win ratio in their regular season conference meets.

In notching their latest victory at the meet, held Saturday at Wickham Park in Manchester, the Blue Wave also extended their undefeated season.

Despite unseasonably warm, muddy conditions, Darien dominated the race’s top 25 finishers, with runners crossing the finish line in eighth, eleventh, and 19th spots.

Darien — ranked third in the state — bested a very strong field, which included six of the top 10 ranked teams in the state. Other top-ranked competing included Xavier, Fairfield Prep, Simsbury, and Norwich Free Academy.

“Amazing. Absolutely amazing. I never would have thought this was a winnable meet,” DHS head coach Tyson Kaczmarek said.  “The team stepped up big time.”

Darien's top finishers in order:

  1. Michael Johnston: 16:58 (8th place overall)
  2. Charlie Baird: 17:04 (11th overall)
  3. Michael Coe: 17:15
  4. Marshall Huffman: 17:50
  5. Peter Kreuch: 18:03
  6. Eli Converse: 18:23

The team's final regular season meet is set for Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Tod’s Point in Greenwich. The Blue Wave will be competing against Greenwich, Fairfield Warde and Wilton.

• Boys soccer: The Darien boys soccer team will get a chace to prove if it is for real on Monday when the Blue Wave host rival New Canaan (4 p.m.), the defending CIAC Class L state champion.

At 7-1-1, Darien may be the FCIAC's most surprising team. After going just 2-6-7 last year, the Blue Wave boasts an FCIAC-best 22 points — two ahead of Staples.

Darien is coming off its first loss of the season, a 1-0 defeat to Wilton on Thursday, although the Blue Wave did have a season-opening 7-1 setback to Westhill that was reversed when the Vikings were forced to forfeit three games for using an ineligible player.

Darien has not yet faced an opponent of New Canaan's caliber. The Rams (6-0-2) are still undefeated in their state title defense.
