UPDATES
• Field hockey: The Wilton field hockey team will try to do Wednesday what no one has done in more than three years — beat Darien.
With just one loss, the Warriors (9-1-0-0 in the FCIAC and 11-1-0-0 overall) visit the unbeaten Blue Wave (10-0-0, 14-0-0) at 3:45 p.m. in a showdown for first place in the FCIAC.
Since Darien and Wilton have been the league's best teams throughout the regular season, Wednesday's contest could be a preview of next month's FCIAC championship game.
After graduating 13 seniors, Darien was expected to face somewhat of a rebuilding year, but the defending four-time CIAC Class M state champions haven't missed a beat.
If possible, Darien appears to be getting stronger and has been putting up some big scores lately, routing Danbury 7-0 and Fairfield Ludlowe 8-0 in its last two games. Darien also reached double figures in a 10-2 rout of Trumbull on Oct. 5.
But Wilton also has put together a fine season, with its only loss a 1-0 setback to Stamford on Oct. 6. Since then, the Warriors have reeled off four straight wins, all shutouts.
Darien, which enters the contest with a remarkable 90-game unbeaten streak (87-0-3), certainly could see Wilton again in the state tournament.
Last year, Wilton was eliminated by New Canaan (2-0) in the first round of the state tourey. In 2009, however, Darien needed double overtime to defeat the Warriors (1-0) in the quarterfinals.
• Football: Darien junior quarterback Henry Baldwin, who completed 11 of 18 passes for 147 yards and three touchdowns in Saturday's 21-0 win over Trumbull, is this week's male winner of the BlueStreak-Overtime FCIAC Player of the Week award.
Darien (5-0) hosts Wilton on Saturday (2 p.m.)
TUESDAY'S RESULTS
- Girls soccer: Darien 4, St. Joseph 4 — In a wild game, the Blue Wave squandered a three-goal lead in the final 26 minutes but still earned a tie against the undefeated Cadets (12-0-1). Dillon Schoen had two goals and an assist for Darien (6-3-3), which opened a 4-1 lead five minutes into the second half.
