Darien Scores and Standings, Oct. 24

Patch's daily digest of Darien sports

UPDATES

• Cross country: The Darien boys and girls cross country teams will compete in the FCIAC championships on Monday at New Canaan's Waveny Park. The meet was originally scheduled for Thursday but was postponed due to Wednesday's torrential rains.

The Danbury boys and Wilton girls are the defending team champions, while Fairfield Ludlowe's Heather Moriarty is the defending girls individual chammpion.

Danbury won its sixth consecutive boys title last year, but Darien — which completed an undefeated regular season — is considered a major threat to the Hatters' reign.

The boys 5K race (3.1 miles) is set to begin at 2:50 p.m. and the girls 4K race at 3:20 p.m. The day also includes freshman and junior varsity races in each gender.

Individually, Fairfield Warde's Harry Warnick is considered the pre-race favorite and was the runner-up last year to Danbury’s Alex Levine, who has graduated.

Darien, which finished 17-0 in the regular season, is led by the senior quartet of Michael Johnston, Charlie Baird, Michael Coe, and Eli Converse, along with  sophomore Marhsall Huffman and freshman Alex Ostberg.

Danbury, which went 16-1 in the regular season, is paced by senior Thomas Moore and junior Nicholas Carlsen.

Among the favorites who could dethrone Moriarty in the girls race is Greenwich's Abby Markowitz, who is undefeated this year, along with Darien’s Grace Loh and Sarah Colon.

• Football: After holding off Wilton 35-34 in double overtime, Darien is sixth in this week's CIAC Class L state rankings. The Blue Wave (6-0) is one of nine teams still undefeated in the division, a list that also includes No. 3 New Canaan (6-0).

Darien plays at Staples (5-0) this week in a battle of unbeatens. Because of the bonus points involved — 50 for Staples, 60 for Darien — the winner will have the inside track to the FCIAC championship game Nov. 18 at Trumbull's McDougall Stadium.

• Junior football: The Darien fifth grade White team sailed to a 20-8 victory over Westport North in its last regular season game. With an overall record of 5-3, the squad now looks forward to continuing the momentum in the playoffs.

Dominating line play by Christian Haranzo, Lawrence Story, Quinn Murphy, Keven Gomez, Christian Evans, Conner Fay, Charlie Walsh, Matt Darrah and Will Hauben was again the key to the win.

Offensively, bruising fullback Peter Bredahl powered his way for two touchdowns. Halfback Tyler Herget caught a well-executed screen pass from quarterback Will Rolapp and scampered 35 yards for another touchdown. Strong-legged Fay kicked a point-after to complete the scoring for White.

Defensively, White was led by linebacker Blake Cellar, who fought through a bout of the flu to make tackles from sideline to sideline. Supporting White defensively was terrific play by linebackers TJ Cornacchia, Bredahl and Gomez, free safety Rolapp and defensive ends Walsh and Herget.
