Darien Girl Swimmers Win Medals

The New Canaan YMCA hosted the Junior East Zone Synchronized Swimming Championship on Feb. 10-13. The New Canaan YMCA Aquianas Junior team of Diya Banerjee, Alice Chidley (Darien), Kate Dalia, Emma Flynn, Alexandra Lin, Isabella Montgomery and Eliza Sturgeon earned a gold medal.
"This team works really well together,” headcoach Jen Muzyk said. “It takes strong teamwork and precise timing to swim a routine like theirs.”

There were a total of 167 athletes, representing 14 teams from across the Northeast, competing at the meet.
In the trio event, Darien’s Hannah Vogel and Alice Chidley along with teammate Emma Flynn earned a silver medal. In the duet event, Kate Dalia and Eliza Sturgeon placed second, Alexandra Lin and Darien’s Emily Roney placed third, and Alice Chidley and Emma Flynn placed fifth.

In the solo event, Alexandra Lin took third and Kate Dalia took sixth. In the figures event, Isabella Montgomery, Alice Chidley, Eliza Sturgeon, Emily Roney and Diya Banerjee placed first, second, third, fourth and ninth respectively.
Three of the Aquianas swimmers - Montgomery, Chidley, and Lin -- were named to the 2012 East Zone Junior Championship 13/15 Age Group All- Star team based on figure scores and a split test.
The New Canaan YMCA Aquianas now prepare for their next meet which is the Senior East Zone Championship to be held March 9-11 in Tonawanda, N.Y.

The South Windsor boys hockey team defeated Darien 4-3 in overtime on Monday afternoon at the Darien Ice Rink after erasing three one-goal deficits.
South Windsor improved to 11-8 while Darien dropped to 13-5 heading into Wednesday's FCIAC finale against Fairfield.
The Blue Wave, who are 10-1 in the FCIAC, can clinch the top seed in the FCIAC playoffs with a win over the Mustangs. Darien then concludes the regular season on Thursday against North Haven.
Ridgefield defeated Norwalk-McMahon 9-1 on Monday to finish 11-1 in the FCIAC, but Darien owns the tiebreaker based on a 4-2 victory that snapped the Tigers' 14-game winning streak.
