Darien Football's Weightlifting Fundraiser, March 8-9

Your interactive daily digest for all Darien scores, schedules and standings -- and a place to add information and photos for all youth sports

On March 8-9, the football team will conduct its annual weightlifting fundraiser "Lifting Grace" to benefit the RE Children’s Project, a foundation established for the primary purpose of finding a cure for Rasmussen's Encephalitis (“RE”).

The annual “Lift-A-Thon” is an event where the football team comes together to raise money for a charitable cause and help a member of DHS football family.

Three years ago, Grace Wohlberg, sister of Blue Wave football alumnus Michael, was diagnosed with RE, a neurological disease that causes seizures, paralysis, and cognitive decline.

The event will take place Thursday, March 8 (freshmen and seniors) and Friday, March 9 (juniors and seniors) in the DHS weight room with players lifting from 3-5 p.m. each day.

Although a “Lift a Thon” is designed to sponsor money for every pound lifted, most people choose to give a flat fee for their donation.

Many of the athletes will lift a combined 700-900 pounds in three lifts, bench, squat and clean. All donations will be tax deductible.

People and businesses who wish to contribute can contact football coach Rob Trifone at rtrifone@darienps.org. Checks should be made payable to RE Children’s Project, 79 Christie Hill Road, Darien, CT 06820.
