Darien Sports Roundup: March 7

Your interactive daily digest for all Darien scores, schedules and standings -- and a place to add information and images for all youth sports

A karate/marital arts competition took place in Darien Saturday, March 4th at the Darien Arts Center.

"This is the first competition where the people running the tournament aren't making a dime," said Jerry Simon of the Fairfield Villari Self Defense Center as all the proceeds went to the Darien Arts Center.

Bonnie Gombos of the Darien Art Center said, "the kids are excited, they practiced harder, they are here to have fun but all this month we have been practicing for them to do their best in this tournament. It helps build their self esteem , some kids are really shy and they get up there and they do their best and that is what we are looking for."

The Darien and New Canaan boys hockey teams will meet for the fourth time this season on Wednesday when they square off in the first round of the Division I state tournament at the Darien Ice Rink (6 p.m.).

Darien (17-5) won two of the previous meetings, including a 5-2 victory in the semifinals of the FCIAC playoffs last week. New Canaan enters the game with a 13-8-1 record.

The winner of Wednesday's contest takes on either No. 4 Glastonbury or No. 13 Simsbury in the quarterfinals on Saturday.

The diving competition is set for Wednesday at Hamden followed by the swimming qualifying meet on Saturday at East Hartford at 3:30 p.m., followed by the finals on March 14 at Wesleyan University at 7:15 p.m.

Darien finished third at the FCIAC meet behind Greenwich and New Canaan.
