Lew & Mary Green and their Ragtime Evolution Quartet

The Darien Arts  Center is thrilled to welcome back Lew and Mary Green and their “Ragtime Evolution Quartet” to the Weatherstone stage on Saturday, July 23 at 8 p.m.

Lew and Mary Green teamed up in 1971, playing classical and ragtime jazz for private engagements. Soon after, they started the “Ragtime Evolution Quartet” and “Green’s New Novelty Orchestra,” feature the novelty ragtime and dance music of the post World War I era.

They have performed ragtime and jazz music in Connecticut for more than 35 years with their Ragtime Evolution Quartet. "We play tunes from the ‘Golden Age of American Music,’ starting with Scott Joplin and Jelly Roll Morton, and including George Gershwin, Fats Waller, Cole Porter and more," said Lew, who started playing professionally in Chicago at the age of 15. Since then, he has performed with the Original Salty Dogs Jazz Band, The Louisiana Repertory Jazz Ensemble of New Orleans, The American Ragtime Orchestra, Woody Allen’s Jazz Band, the Boston Philharmonic and other groups.

The “Ragtime Evolution Jazz Band” has performed in Connecticut and the Northeast since 1973. The musical repertoire includes classic Ragtime, authentic New Orleans jazz, popular music of the swing
