Just Call Him 'Captain'

Name: John Conley

Age: 17

School: Darien High School

Accomplishments: John, a senior, captained three varsity teams: indoor track, outdoor track and cross-country. He runs the mile and two-mile in the indoor and outdoor seasons in the winter and spring in addition to running cross country in the fall. John's best time in the mile is 4:29 and 9:42 in the two-mile which was good enough for 11th. place in the Class MM State Open Championships.

John was All-FCIAC Cross Country. He talked about his most memorable moment in the three sports. "We (Darien) won the Cross Country title a couple of years ago in the Class MM State Championships becoming the first Blue Wave team to win the title." He hopes to continue his track career when he attends Dartmouth in the fall.

Key to Excellence: John, an avid reader, is a member of the National Honor Society. He also is a member of Darien's four-person "Challenge Team" which competes on MSG Varsity television against other schools in a quiz show format. John captains the team which makes him a captain of four teams at DHS.

He's a member of Person to Person, which collects clothes and food for the disadvantaged.

Three summers ago, John and his church group travelled to Kentucky where they helped build a home for a needy family. John is also a National Merit finalist; he also won the Bausch and Lomb Honorary Science Award last year, which goes to the junior with the highest average in science.

John is the son of Tricia and Chris Conley.  He has  three siblings; sisters Alicia (24); Carolyn (21), a senior at Notre Dame; and Christy, (13), an 8th grader.
