Loss to Crusaders Ends Wave's Winning Streak
Darien Girls Basketball's 59-41 loss to Trinity Catholic ends a four-game winning streak; still in the running for a berth in the FCIAC.
The Darien girls basketball team saw their four game winning streak end Friday evening, in a tough 59-41 loss at Trinity Catholic.
The game was close in the early going. Trinity took an early 8-2 lead, but the Wave came back behind baskets by Liz Calby and Leanne Stone to end the first quarter down 8-6.
The score was tied 14-14 midway through the second period, when Trinity broke the game open with a 15-1 run. Anna Rae Anderson stopped the bleeding with a 3 pointer just before halftime.
In the second half, Trinity's powerful inside game led by Eileen Ornousky (18 points), and sisters Cayleigh and Mackenzie Griffith (13 and 8 points respectively) continued to create foul problems for the Darien front line, and enabled the Crusaders to build their lead to 25 points late in the fourth quarter. The Wave fought hard to the buzzer, however, ending the game on 9-2 run.
Darien's record now stands at 7-3 in the FCIAC, and 8-4 overall: good for a tie for 7th in the FCIAC with Danbury.
The Trinity game marks the beginning of the toughest stretch of the season for the Wave, as they host Staples (8-3 in FCIAC, 9-4 overall) on Tuesday, then face the top two teams in the FCIAC—Ridgefield and St. Joseph—in the games that follow. Nevertheless, with eight games left on the league schedule, Darien's hopes for their first FCIAC tournament berth in three years remain very viable.
