Norwalk Hands Darien Baseball First Loss

Seven-run third inning for Bears dooms the Wave to a 14-11 loss.

The Darien baseball team lost for the first time this season Friday, dropping a 14-11 slugfest to Norwalk in which a combined 25 runs were scored.

After Darien starter David Hickey gave up two runs in the top of the first on Kevin Danielle's two-run homer, the Blue Wave answered with six in the bottom half, when Norwalk starter John Cohen was the victim of some shaky defense.

Darien grabbed a 3-2 lead on RBI singles by Justin Prior, Dan Pigeon and Sam Gillespie. Scott Dempsey followed with a two-run single.

However, after a scoreless second inning—the only one in the game—things unraveled for Darien in the third, when the Bears erupted for seven runs against Hickey.

Tom Sullivan opened with a double. Cohen, who bats seventh, singled him home. After a successful delayed steal tied the game, the Bears tacked on four more runs.

Hickey was relieved by Andrew Hurn, who surrendered the final two runs in the inning.

Hickey surrendered eight runs and 11 hits over just three-and-two-thirds innings with no walks and three strikeouts.

Darien closed to 10-8 in the fourth on an error and RBI single by Matt Anderson. Cohen was relieved by John Lauttenbach, who who got the win. 

Norwalk had another big inning in the sixth, scoring four runs. Spencer Jacoby got his second double in the game and eventually scored on a groundout. Then it was single, single, error for a 13-8 lead, followed by Jim Cooksey's RBI single.

Darien made it closer with a run in the sixth and two in the seventh, and the game ended 14—11.

Norwalk improved  to 3-3 and Darien dropped to 4-1.

The Wave hosts Ludlowe on Monday at 4 p.m. in its next game.
