Darien coasted to an 8-0 win over Staples on Wednesday night, scoring four goals in the first period, and another four in the third.
Staples is in its first full season of playing a varsity schedule after splitting last season between jv and varsity games. They came into the Darien game with only a 12-man squad and a 0-12 record (0-9 FCIAC). Credit the undermanned team with trying their best against Darien, a strong team with a 9-3-1 record.
The Wave scored two goals within the first 45-seconds. Ellie Bullitt opened the scoring, followed by Lexi Perticone's first of three goals on her way to a hat trick. Lauren Perkins and Grace Loh completed the first period scoring. The Staples team had trouble clearing its own zone, and after one period, the shots-on-goal favored Darien 14-1.
Neither team could score in the second period with the Wave outshooting Staples 12-0.
The third period featured goals by Taylor Holcomb, Sloane Clarke and two by Perticone for an 8-0 final score.
The Blue Wave girls face West Haven (1-13) on Sat. at 1 p.m.
