Metro-North Explains Monday Morning's Train Delays

Metro-North: "The delays of up to 30 minutes that you may have experienced this morning resulted from a number of unrelated signal and equipment problems that occurred throughout the AM Peak period."

Metro-North Railroad, which operates the New Haven Line, released this explanation of the delays commuters experienced Monday morning.

The delays of up to 30 minutes that you may have experienced this morning resulted from a number of unrelated signal and equipment problems that occurred throughout the AM Peak period. These combined to cause significant train congestion.
These included:
• A signal problem in the vicinity of Stamford that occurred shortly after 6 AM. Although this was quickly resolved, delays were incurred early on in the AM Peak period.
• A track switch and signal malfunction around 8 AM at a vital interlocking (where trains can move from one track to another) at Mott Haven where all three lines converge.
Around the same time, another problem developed in this area when the 6:52 AM train from Old Greenwich experienced a door light problem as it was crossing the interlocking. Until this problem was fixed, for safety reasons we could not move the train and further congestion built up.
The delays caused in this heavy-traffic Bronx area were further exacerbated by having one of three inbound tracks out of service for our right-of-way improvement work.
