DHS Girl's Volleyball Wins Big Against Wilton in Home Opener

Darien High School Girl’s Volleyball hosted Wilton on Monday afternoon, for their first home game of the season. With a state championship under their belt from 2012, the storied program came into the season with high expectations. The team lost a lot of seniors, and look to continue their championship-caliber level of play with the younger players they have. After a powerful win over Westhill last week, the Blue Wave came back to DHS with a chance to impress their home crowd. They indeed put on a show for the fans in attendance, winning in three straight sets.

The Wave’s dominance never waivered. In all aspects of their game, the home team put away points that let their hard-earned reputation shine through. With relentless blocks and strong kills, Darien was just too much for Wilton to keep up with. The Blue Wave started out strong with a 25-10 win highlighted by strong serving, setting the tone for the rest of the match.

Moving into the second set, it was clear that Darien was in control. Juniors Claire Naughton and Celia Martzolf shone in the front row, putting away block after block, building a brick wall of defense, stifling countless Wilton scoring attempts. Senior captain Nicole Schmidt contributed to the Wave’s offensive threat by adding her hard-hitting kills to bolster the lead.

By the time the third set rolled around, the Blue Wave’s victory was all but secure. With power and finesse, the girls secured the final set by a score of 25-5. The win was typical for Darien, but nonetheless important. Their hard work in practice under coach LaRusso was on display today, and, hopefully for the Wave, should be the beginning of another successful season.
