The movies "No" and "Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" are playing, and you could take in a garage sale on Saturday.

Here are some things to do in Darien this weekend:

  • Movies, Part 1: No (2012) — (Not Rated; 1 hr. 52 mins.) — trailerRotten TomatoesIMDb — New York Times review — in Spanish with English subtitles, is playing at the Darien Library at 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. Friday. "In 1988, Chilean mili tary dictator Augusto Pinochet, due to international pressure, is forced to call a plebiscite on his presidency. The country will vote YES or NO to Pinochet extending his rule for another eight years. Opposition leaders for the NO persuade a brash young advertising executive, Rene Saavedra, to spearhead their campaign." -- from the description on the Darien Library website
  • Movies, Part 2: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971) — 1 hr., 40 mins. — trailer — Rotten TomatoesIMDb — playing at 1 p.m. Friday at Darien Library — starring Gene Wilder, a resident of Stamford (this is not the later movie with Johnny Depp) — Part of the Tween Film Fridays series: "Junior film buffs can cool down every Friday with a screening of movie classics.  All movies will be rated PG.  Ages 10 to 12." — Darien Library website
  • Movies, Part 3: Here's what's playing at the Darien Playhouse: Planes — trailer — Rotten Tomatoes — IMDb — at 4, 6 and 8 p.m. Friday, for other weekend times, check here. — We're the Millers at 4:30, 7 and 9:15 p.m. — (not even gonna link to the raunchy trailer; nope, not gonna do it — it's pretty much a spoiler, anyway) — Rotten TomatoesIMDb — at 7 and 9:15 p.m. Friday, check here for other weekend times.
  • All teenagers are invited to the Teen Summer Reading Finale Party at 3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 16,  in the Darien Library Teen Lounge. "There will be games, books, pizza, and prizes. Teens will be issued one raffle ticket at the door and one additional raffle ticket for each review submitted on the Darien Library website before Friday at noon. Gift cards from Panera Bread, iTunes, Amazon, and Starbucks will be raffled off throughout the party. Stop by to eat pizza, play video games, talk books, and even win! All Teens 12-18 years old are welcome even if they did not participate in summer reading activies." — from the Darien Library website (looks like you don't even need to know how to read)
  • You can pick up home décor items, mirrors, art, kitchen items, toys, books, CDs, DVDS and more  at a tag sale from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at 1 Gracie Ln., Darien. Why do we mention this tag sale and no others in Darien? Because the sellers posted an announcement on Darien Patch. You can too! Go here and post your tag sale -- it's a lot easier than posting signs on telephone poles and trees around town (no splinters, no sticky sap online!). You can also post a comment at the bottom of this article about where and when your sale takes place.
