Take a 15 minutes to learn CPR training on Saturday, then see how to poison someone at the play "Arsenic & Old Lace" in Norwalk.

Here's what's going on in and around Darien this weekend:

  • In 15 minutes on Saturday, you can learn how to save the life of someone experiencing a cardiac arrest. It doesn't matter if you're a kid or an adult. You don't need an appoinment. Just show up at the Darien YMCA between 10 a.m and 4 p.m. (well, we're not sure, maybe 3:45 p.m.) and Post 53 Darien EMS will give you a 15-minute lesson. "Each year, nearly 785,000 Americans suffer from a heart attack.  Nearly 300,000 of these people suffer sudden cardiac arrest at the time of their heart attack, outside of a hospital setting.  Less than one in four receive CPR from a bystander, and only about 5% of cardiac arrest victims survive."
  • Arsenic & Old Lace, a Broadway classic, will be read by actors from Theater Artists Workshop at 5 Glover Ave. in Norwalk at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. "Written by Joseph Kesselring in 1939, Arsenic and Old Lace ran on Broadway from 1941 to 1944, a total of 1444 performances and a legendary hit. It is a most unusual comedy - about the elderly Brewster sisters who have taken to murdering lonely old men by poisoning them with a glass of home-made elderberry wine lace with arsenic, strychnine and 'just a pinch of cyanide.'" -- from the event listing on Norwalk Patch
  • A discussion of the book, The Hurried Child by David Elkind, takes place Saturday at the South Norwalk Branch library with the author, a professor emeritus of child development at Tufts University. "The book calls attention to the dangers of hurrying children and overwhelming them with pressures and expectations that can lead to a wide range of crises later on in their lives." After the discussion, the film, Race to Nowherewill be shown. The film is "directed by a parent whose then 12 year-old daughter developed emotional and physical health issues due to school stress," according to the library website. "Those who want to discuss the book are invited to stay to view the movie and those who only want to view the film are welcome to do so.  Multiple copies of the book will be available at the library. This event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.  For more information or to register, call 203 899-2790 x 15902 or register online."
