From the New York Times "Reactions" link, above. This is the kind of thing that sounds so intrusive (about his loss of memory) that if a family member had told it to me before his death, I'd have asked the interviewee again whether he or she really wanted to make it public. On the other hand, I can't point to any harm it would have done when he said it or afterward: "In a recent interview, Mr. …   more ›

Thomas Kinkade, 54, 'Painter of Light'

The famous American painter from Los Gatos, CA, died Friday at the age of 54.

The Los Gatos, CA arts community was mourning the death of America's "Painter of Light" Friday with news that Thomas Kinkade had died. "Thom," as he was dearly called by friends and fellow artists in Los Gatos, is being remembered for bringing art to mainstream America, regardless of income levels and socio-economic backgrounds. "He had come to be an extremely affable man," said Los Gatos painter David Stonesifer, whose paintings grace local homes along with those of Kinkade's. "He was acting like a free spirit ... it was sort of like the kind of thing you wish would have happened to him years ago to have it reflected in his paintings." Stonesifer said he was "deeply saddened with the news." Millions of his "Kinkade paintings" adorn walls …

Hilton Kramer, 84, 'Scourge of the Art World'

The late art critic and editor Hilton Kramer was feared for his lashing critiques of modern art movements and artists, but his thunderbolts were hurled by a mild-mannered man who lived on a quiet lane in Westport.

Hilton Kramer, a widely read art critic who died Tuesday at the age of 84, hurled thunderbolts at major figures and movements in the art world for decades, often from his home on a quiet back road in Westport. He wasn't just admired for his insights and knowledge. He was also feared for his courage in identifying what he found awful. It didn't matter how popular it was or how many enemies he made by saying what, according to his best judgment, he thought was true. New York magazine dubbed him the "scourge of the art world," and Newsweek reported in the mid-1990s that according to one survey he was the second-most read critic in that world. Kramer was said to be the kind of critic that "the galleries and museums of New York keep an eye out …

You Said It: Darien

'Character Builds Winners, Not Always the Reverse'

The most interesting of today's comments from Patch account-holders in your town and neighboring communities.

DARIEN: "Please do not appeal the loss of the track team title. Darien didn't win. End of story. The events were unfortunate, but it was an honest data entry mistake, and in the end, another team scored more points than Darien. There is nothing to appeal. Make this a teaching moment. Show the kids that we accept both wins and losses. And if they want to win, well then encourage the team to try harder next year. Don't turn this into a New Canaan third place trophy bonfire event. Don't turn this into a Ridgefield punch the ump event. The Darien girls did great, but another team did a little better. Send that other team a note of congratulations signed by every girl on the Darien track team, saying we look forward to competing against them …
