Composed of a number of Town officials and community organizations, the Office of Emergency Management serves to keepMore Darien safe. With that goal in mind, the office helps the Town plan for, respond to and recover from emergencies. <br /><br />The office is chaired by Deputy Fire Marshal, Marc McEwan, and is made up of the First Selectwoman, route: {:action=>"show", :id=>"first-selectwomans-office", :controller=>"listings"} -->, all three fire departments, the Department of Health, the Department of Public Works, Human Resources, Social Services, the Darien Police Department, the Darien Red Cross, the Darien Community Fund, <!-- name: Post 53, CERT, the Moderator of the RTM and the Public Safety Committee of the RTM.
Department of Public Works (DPW)

The Department of Public Works (DPW) is responsible for the construction and maintenance of most of Darien’sMore infrastructure, including roads, railroads, bridges, refuse disposal, recycling, and sewer systems. <br /><br />With a team of 30 full-time and five part-time employees, the Department provides Darien residents with a wide range of services. The DPW is organized into six major areas of responsibility: Public Works Management & Engineering, Highway Maintenance, Solid Waste Disposal and Recycling, Public Building Management, Parking Facilities  and Railroad Maintenance, and Sewer Collection System Maintenance.
Darien Town Hall

The former site of Mather Junior High, the Town Hall is now Darien’s main government building.

The firstMore floor is busy. There you’ll find the Town Clerk, route: {:action=>"show", :controller=>"local_facts", :id=>"town-clerk-donna-e-rajczewski"} -->, Tax Assessor and Tax Collector; the Registrars of Voters, the Health and Social Services Department, the Parks and Recreation Department and the Youth Commission. The offices of the Information Technology Department and the Fire Marshal are also located on the first floor.<br /><br />The First Selectwoman’s Office is located on the second floor along with the <!-- name: Finance, Public Works, Building and Planning and Zoning Departments. <br /><br />The Public Meeting Room and Auditorium host many public meetings, including the regular meetings of the Board of Selectmen.</p>

Fire Marshal's Office

Established in 1980 as a fulltime department, the Fire Marshal works closely with Darien's three volunteer fireMore departments.</p> <p>The Office, located in the Town Hall, includes a Fire Marshal (Robert J. Buch), Deputy Fire Marshal (Marc P. McEwan), part-time Fire Inspector (David R. Francis), and a Secretary (Angela Clark).</p> <p>The Darien Fire Marshal works with and through the Connecticut State Fire Marshal's Office. Building Officials and Fire Marshals are under the State Department of Public Safety.<br /><br />Duties of the Fire Marshal include reviewing plans for most construction, fire investigation, fire prevention education, permits for blasting and tank removal, and certification of hazardous materials transport vehicles. <br /> <br />The Fire Marshal also issues permits and inspects all gasoline, commercial fuel oil and liquid petroleum gas tank installations for Darien.</p>

Refuse Disposal & Recycling Center (The Dump)

Everybody in Darien goes to "The Dump," making it a popular site for candidates for political office to campaign forMore election. Operated by the Department of Public Works (DPW), the Refuse Disposal & Recycling Center is actually a transfer station rather than a permanent dump or landfill. Services and features include garbage and recycling deposit, a free mulch pile and a swap shop where residents may leave or take useful household items.</p> <p>The Dump is available by permit only to residents and commercial refuse collectors. Special permits and fees apply to hazardous items, such as refrigerators and air conditioners.
